As with any other type of web presence, you will need to optimize your blog so that people can find it. Today, there are a number of blog indexes that you can register with in order to achieve that purpose. Similar to traditional search engines, each blog index has different criteria for determining how your blog will be featured.

Among other things, you may have to register with individual blog indexes, or use a blog platform that that is associated with the index. As an example, Technorati is one of the most popular blog indexes available. In order for your blog to be listed on Technorati, you will have to register your blog. Then, each time you add a new post to your blog, you will have to ping the index, or make sure that your blog does so automatically. Unlike a regular search engine, Technorati will not automatically crawl your blog and index it.

Because blogs are useful for creating online interaction, you may find that some indexes will rank your blog based on its popularity, or the number of other blogs that link to it. Once again, Technorati provides and ideal example of this in action. They will measure your blog based on the number of blogs that reference your blog. This is referred to as your blogs “authority”. Technorati will also measure your blog by how many readers mark your blog as a favorite. While these ranks may not always affect the placement of individual blog entries, they play a significant role in determining whether or not your blog ever becomes one of the 100 most popular blogs tracked by Technorati. As may be expected, achieving this status is crucial to generating increased traffic to your blog.
