Home Air Fresheners
September 12, 2009
Have you ever been away from home for a significant period of time, only to return and wonder “what is that smell”? Because we spend so much time in our homes, we tend to grow accustom to the way it smells and we don’t notice ‘weird’ odors, but guaranteed your visitors do. If you’re concerned about the odor in your home, consider a new choice for air freshener.
There are countless supermarket choices for air freshener, from aerosol to powder. You could potentially fill your cart with different air fresheners and never find one that truly works. The trouble with the typical air freshener is that it simply masks odors or causes allergic reactions. Some people even claim to be able to ‘taste’ their air freshener.
If you’re seeking a ‘fresh’ approach, try aromatherapy. The benefits that come with this choice are abundant.
People choose aromatherapy for a variety of different reasons, to include reduces stress, alternative healing, calming, and balance of mind, body, and spirit. But, one raw benefit of aromatherapy comes right in the name, “aroma”. Using scented herbal oils and homemade air freshener will personalize the scent of your home and generally provides a more permanent solution to home odors than do store bought aerosols and potpourris.
Homemade air freshener is easier to accomplish that you might think, and it’s very economical. There are well over 100 essential oils to choose from, all you really need to do is determine which scents you like and what feeling you’re seeking to incur within your home. You can blend and mix to create a custom scent that’s all your own.
Air freshener bases consist simply of water, alcohol and your selected oil. You will need a bottle to house your mixture, preferably one that has a spray nozzle. Mix 1 ounce of distilled water with 1 ounce of high-proof alcohol like Vodka and then add 30 to 50 drops of your oil of choice. As with any household project, you should take care not to spill and avoid getting the product in your eyes, etc.
Choosing the oil for your air freshener is quite fun. A variety of clean air plants are available for this purpose. You can choose from simple classics like Orange, Rose, and Cinnamon or you may choose oils based solely on their inherent properties. You may blend and mix different oils to impart a different mood within your home.
Some air fresheners have antiseptic qualities that can be beneficial when a family member is sick. Eucalyptus has a strong scent but will help disinfect the air in to eliminate airborne illness. Using essential oils can allow you to multitask and create purpose for your air freshener, unlike the store bough variety, which will only succeed in a temporarily pleasant scent.
Creating your own air fresheners will allow you to use your creativity to develop a blend that is customized to you and your household. You will find that coming into your home after a stint away only seeks to heighten the experience, as opposed to causing you to scrunch your nose at the smell in your own home.
