Men’s Watches
July 31, 2009
I am remembering my grandfather’s watch. After more than 40 years of hanging out together, his watch was as much a part of him as the cap that he wore. Even from my earliest memory, I was learning that men’s watches were much more that just something that kept time; it became a symbol of who you are and what you stood for. As an adult I grew to appreciate what a good solid timepiece that lasted year after year could grow to mean. Now’s your chance to start a new tradition!
That watch, which I still have today, was bought in the 1960’s. My grandfather had been given the same brand when he was in the Navy and so when he got out of the service he decided to buy one to wear every day, figuring if those men’s watches could handle all the stress he put on it while he was enlisted it would surely survive the outside world. And it did… and did and did. My grandfather owned a Texaco station in a small town back when there were only full service gas stations and his watch was along for the ride for almost 30 yrs of early risings.
When my grandfather died, the family got together to divide up this things and since this was #1 on the list for both my brother and I, we decided to share it. This was one of those men’s watches that just couldn’t be bought at any store. Ironically, the first thing we did with it was probably the worst thing we could have done. We had that watch that had lasted 3 generations cleaned, thinking it would last even longer. That would end up being the beginning of the end as far as keeping time was concerned. I guess 30 yrs of staying the same is important. We still have it to this today but it stopped running after our attempt to clean it up. But even though the hands don’t move anymore, the memories are still the same.
Sadly I think that many people today look at men’s watches as something disposable. I hope that if you are looking to buy one for yourself or someone special in your life, that you’ll take a minute to find one that not only catches your eye but one that says something about who you are and who knows, it might just be passed down to someone who looks up to you too.
