Each of these sections requires are hours of intense study to learn the concepts and skills that are required in order for the student to become a successful certified nursing assistant. The classroom teaches the students the basics of the job requirements. The hands-on portion of the training teaches the students the techniques necessary to deal with the patients and situations that they will encounter daily.

Certified Nursing Assistant Class-Hands On
This portion of the class requires students to interact with patients under supervision on a daily basis. Students are required to perform a number of competency skills up to and including bathing patients, administering medication, changing sheets and clothing, assisting patients in ambulation, reading to and conversing with patients, and obtaining weight and vital signs. CNA’s must record the activities they participate in and patient condition that they encounter when working with clients. Occasionally CNA’s encounter difficult patients and those with mental and physical handicaps; they must be able to deal with the patients professionally and personaly in order to accomplish the tasks set before them.

Certified Nursing Assistant Class-Classroom
This is generally the basis for any CNA training. Usually the training begins in the classroom familiarizing students with the position and what in entails. Classroom training includes video instruction, lectures by teachers and other professionals, audio/video instruction, and hands on demonstrations by other CNA’s. These methods of instruction are all focused on learning all aspects of patient care. Many schools offer this section of the training online so that students can adjust the classroom section to meet there home scheduling needs.

Certified Nursing Assistant Class-Certification
There is an exam at the end of completing both portions of the training. Upon successful completion of every aspect of training students are required to take a proctored state test, usually referred to as board exams. This test is administered at a certified state testing facility and is generally at the same location that most of the in class training was given. These testing opportunities are given repeatedly but with a very small class. The opportunity to take the test and use materials in a location that is already familiar to students has a tendency to increase the success rate.

Certified Nursing Assistant Class-Certification Reciprocity
Generally once a student is certified in a specific state there is an opportunity to gain reciprocity if they move to a different location. The student must contact the state CNA registry for which they are relocating to and request and application for reciprocity. After completing any necessary forms and sending copies of the certification the CNA should receive certification in that state. This can be a very lengthy process and is one that the CNA should begin as early as possible before moving. Unfortunately there is no national registry at this time, and so the certification varies from state to state.
