Why I Love Bakugan Battle Brawlers

March 31, 2009

bakuganI’ve got the hots for Bakugan… I don’t know what it is about collectible card games. I’m a sucker for them. Every time a new once catches my eye, I feel the rumblings of obsession prickling the hairs on the back of my neck.

My first love was the Star Wars collectible card game, man I had a some really great cards there. I spent far too much money on that game. I tried to kick the habit… but it didn’t stop there. Next it was *cough*Pokemon*cough* not the proudest moment in my life. Hero Clix was a blast, the Yu-Gi-Oh card game had me for a while, and I’m pretty sure I avoided the Digimon craze. After that, I was done. No more for me thank you very much. I thought I had it out of my system. And then I met the new Bakugan Battle Brawlers game. This game combines the best of both worlds: collectible cards, AND toys. My inner child squeals with glee at the thought. What is Bakugan you ask? Well, let me enlighten you.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers was originally an Anime cartoon series that came out in 2007. It’s a pretty corny cartoon, all things told. Run of the mill boiler plate plot line, cliche characters, and predictable ending. Basically special cards rain randomly from the sky one day, a few friends invent a game called Bakugan, turns out there is an alternate universe called Vestroia where these Bakugan are real. Their universe falls out of balance and merges with our universe, and Dan Kuso (the main character) and his friends must battle the evil Bakugan Naga to save both universes. They win, the Bakugan go home, Earth is safe. Nothing new or inspiring here. Basically Digimon repackaged and without the cute little monster animals.

What does inspire though, is the game that accompanies the cartoon. You play it in real life pretty much exactly as you see it played by the characters on the TV. Minus the giant battling monsters. The game consists of magnetic transforming Bakugan monsters that start out as spheres, but when they encounter the magnetic Gate cards they unfold to reveal the creature inside. If you want to learn how to play Bakugan, you can look at the official website. There are all kinds of trick shots and in depth strategies you can devise when playing this game. It’s so popular Toys R Us has been hosting tournaments around the US.

Another thing that makes Bakugan so enjoyable is that the game is still evolving. New updates and ideas are coming out all the time, and the creators are very interactive with their community. What’s not to like about the Bakugan game? You get toys, transforming marbles, cards, and magnets!

Got something to say?
